House Changes Old Media Rules

Iron Mill News on the House Floor?

The last reference to the media’s Golden Age has been axed from House rules. It used to be that the speaker could—but in recent times, at least, never did—allow a reporter from the Associated Press, United Press International, ABC, CBS, and NBC on to the floor of the House to report. Of course, those rules were written when UPI was a factor and TV was run by the networks. In recognizing that the old media era is over, the GOP changed the rules this month to say simply that the speaker can allow a representative from “each media outlet” on to the floor. But it kept the requirement that reporters be “reputable.”
